Partnership with VFW Post 2267 to Benefit Veterans
Donations accepted at WCCU Richland Center through June 7th.
Marg Freeman, from VFW Post 2267 in Richland Center, was a recent guest speaker for WCCU Richland Center staff. The Veterans of Foreign Wars has roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. To become a member of the VFW the individual has to have an Honorable Discharge or still serving in an imminent danger zone (combat, hostile fire) on land, sea or into an airspace specifically designated as an imminent danger area to perform a mission in that airspace.
Many of the Post members are also members of the Military Honor Guard to show respect to our fallen Comrades. Many are also dual, triple or quadruple members of other Military organizations within our community and serve or give back in various volunteer activities.
VFW Post 2267 originally had 37 Charter members, one of whom was Marg’s grandfather, Richard M. Gassen, who also served in WWI. The last Charter member passed away in 2015 (George Marshall). The VFW Post 2267 annually hold several events such as the Buddy Poppy drive, Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy essays, calendar sales and the Tomah VA and local Veterans fund raiser. They also coordinate our local Memorial Day Parade and services that follow at the cemetery along with the Woman’s Relief Corp for the Water service for those that perished at sea.
WCCU Credit Union is partnering with VFW Post 2267 to collect personal items needed and used by our veterans at the Tomah VA Medical Center. (Cash donations are also welcome and will be used for activities, entertainment, special projects and the library.)
